THE BITLY x RIPL Impact
Every RIPL sold is a ripple effect for positive change. Each bottle funds a full day of employment for someone in Bali, Indonesia, to collect plastic from beaches, helping to lift them and their family out of poverty. Every notebook’s profits go toward the purchase and protection of 1,000 sq ft of rainforest in Brazil.
Statistics for this order:
500 days of employment for RIPL's team of plastic collectors.
An estimated half a million plastic bottles will be collected and prevented from reaching the ocean.
That’s the equivalent of about 1750 full garbage bags.
The team
RIPL works with people in coastal communities who experience the effects of plastic pollution first hand, every day. By employing them to collect plastic, RIPL is turning waste into a resource, providing a new source of income, and empowering them to protect their home.
How it works
The proceeds from the Bitly x RIPL bottle are being used to fund the employment of plastic collectors in Balinese coastal communities.
The collectors we work with clean beaches and waterways, preventing plastic from reaching the ocean. They then take the plastic to an 'impact center,' where they sort it ready for recycling.
As well as preventing ocean plastic and reducing poverty, it spreads awareness of the problem and enables local people to become part of the solution.
The proceeds from every Bitly x RIPL notebook go towards buying and protecting 1,000 sq ft of rainforest in Brazil, saving it from deforestation and protecting endangered species that call it home. Every notebook’s cover is also made from up-cycled ocean plastic.
Why do we do it?
Our oceans are being choked by plastic, and deforestation is the greatest threat facing wildlife.. But despite the scale of these problems, we believe that every action really can make a huge difference.
When we all focus our efforts on creating systemic change – like employment and ongoing recycling programs – the impact extends far beyond the initial action, creating a ripple effect of positive change.
